Heat Exchanger Design

Project Description

In this project, we designed a shell-and-tube heat exchanger based on design specifications outlined in the project details. The unit is used to cool a hot water stream using a cold water stream. The coolant was placed on the tube-side pass and the heatant on the shell-side pass. This configuration was chosen because of these 3 factors:

  • Avoidance of condensation on the outside of the shell in humid ambient conditions
  • Taking advantage of cooling by heat loss through the shell into the ambient air
  • Lower coolant pressure drop

The design specifications for this project were specifications from a typical industrial application of a shell and tube type heat exchanger. The design was modelled after calculating the minimum design requirements of the heat transfer.
